The Planning Division for Meridian Fire provides executive level support in the areas of planning, research and development. The Planning Chief works extensively with other City, State and Federal agencies along with various private sector entities to coordinate delivery of emergency services.  This position is responsible for community risk assessment and analysis, managing the capitol budget, planning for fire station and administrative facilities, fire apparatus purchased, personnel, department testing, performance and quality control, and developing and updating policies.

Division Chief of Planning, Charlie Butterfield     

  Division Chief Charlie Butterfield started his firefighting career with the City of Sun Valley Fire Department in 1996. After completing paramedic school, Charlie was hired as a Firefighter/Paramedic by Wood River Fire and Rescue and rose through the ranks to the position of Lieutenant/Paramedic in 2006. In 2013, Charlie was appointed as the Assistant Fire Chief for the City of Sun Valley Fire Department until accepting the Division Chief of Planning position for the Meridian Fire Department in 2016.

Chief Butterfield holds an Associate’s degree in Fire Service Technology, a Bachelor’s degree in Fire and Emergency Services Administration, and a Master’s degree in Education. He is Pro-Board certified to the Fire Officer II level and in 2015 obtained the designation of Chief Fire Officer (CFO) from the Center for Public Safety Excellence. Chief Butterfield is also a certified Fire Investigation Technician with the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI).

In his spare time, Charlie enjoys traveling, snow skiing, boating and spending time with his son.
