Green Grants Available to Meridian Businesses

Meridian, ID – (December 3, 2009) – The City of Meridian and VengaWorks are once again seeking applications for Meridian’s Green Grant Fund. The fund awards up to $2,000 each to Meridian applicants that demonstrate new green jobs, new jobs in a business that is in a high-performance building, or new jobs in a business working to make its building more energy efficient.

Grant applications will be accepted from November 30, 2009 to April 30, 2010; all recipients will be notified by or before May 15, 2010. The grant program will end April 30, 2010 or upon depletion of the grant fund, whichever comes first.

The City of Meridian and VengaWorks both received rebates through an Idaho Power incentive program which rewards customers who invest in efficient building construction. In this case, the new Meridian City Hall and VengaWorks’ LEED certified building both earned rebates which are funding this grant program through a unique public-private partnership.

Together, the City and VengaWorks are reinvesting these funds back into the community to encourage job development and recognize the importance of energy conservation.

“It’s very gratifying to see Meridian businesses are interested in improving their sustainability and exploring green job creation,” said Meridian Mayor Tammy de Weerd. “The City of Meridian has embraced a more environmentally-aware mindset and hopes through this program to encourage others to do the same.”

“We have long been advocates of green building practices, and this grant program shows that it really does pay dividends,” said Randall Ussery, VengaWorks’ director of sustainability. “We’re excited to partner with the City of Meridian and give businesses an opportunity to work in our new building, which was built as a showcase for sustainable business building and practices.”

To date, nine Meridian businesses have been awarded $10,000 from the City of Meridian through this program. An additional $9,000 has been awarded to recipients who choose to use VengaWorks’ Meridian facility in the form of a reduced membership fee for six months.
