It’s that time of year again – I’m busy preparing for Meridian’s annual State of the City address. The theme for this year is A Rising Star. There are many reasons why this theme resonated so much this year and I look forward to sharing those with you at my annual speech. The idea for the theme came from the title of a feature story about Meridian in a North American business magazine called “Business in Focus”. The reporter, who was based on the east coast, said the facts he had gathered for the story almost sounded unreal. It made me realize that often because we live here, we forget just how awesome we have it!

In 2017, we made great strides for our City – bringing even more family wage jobs to the area, seeing developments such as the Ten Mile Urban Renewal District blossom and we added more recreational options! It was exciting to open two new parks – Keith Bird Legacy Park and Reta Huskey. We found ways to be even more transparent with our citizens – from public noticing on NextDoor, to the use of technology for better access. I am excited to bring you these highlights in more detail and discuss other projects that occurred last year during my address.

Perhaps one of the most anticipated portions of my speech each year is learning about what’s to come in Meridian in 2018. I will discuss how upcoming projects or initiatives will fall in line with the City’s strategic plan. The key points of that plan include: Strategic growth, economic vibrancy, responsive government, safe, healthy and secure, as well as arts, culture, and recreation. I’m also eager to announce an expansion of a Meridian business, among other projects that are on the docket for 2018.

The State of the City is a fantastic opportunity for community members to connect and find out what’s ahead for Meridian. Join me! The event is Wednesday, February 7 at 4:29 p.m. at Meridian Middle School. It is free to attend the address and $10 for the Taste of Meridian, a reception following my speech.

This year the Taste of Meridian features a fantastic line-up of local restaurants including; Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Sa-Wad-Dee, The Counter, Idaho Pizza Company, Fiesta Guadalajara, Revitalize Juice Bar, The Curb, and Sodalicious.

I look forward to seeing you at the State of the City address and Taste of Meridian!
