The State of our City is thriving with a focus on transparency in all we do.  I was over the moon to deliver so much great news about our community this past week!

In 2018, we will see a major expansion at Roaring Springs/Wahooz with updates to the kiddie pool including three new slides and more than 20 play elements. The company is also expanding the newly named “Galaxy Event Center” located in Wahooz, from a facility that can seat 200 people to one that can seat nearly 600 people – a conference space that is greatly needed in Meridian.

Brighton Corporation is building a four-story office building, their new home base at Ten Mile Crossing. The company is also building a first of its kind residential community near The Village at Meridian. It will be a planned ‘active adult’ (55+) development overlooking Kleiner Park.

We’ve added more pathways and parks and look forward to hearing what our kids and public have to say regarding the name of the new South Meridian 77-acre park. It will be the community’s largest park when fully built; construction on the first phase begins this year.

A few updates that may have been lost amidst these major announcements I believe are incredibly important for our citizens to know about, because all updates make our processes even more transparent to the community. I believe transparency in government is key, but we can always do better. That’s why in 2017, we implemented several new ways to make it easier for citizens to be “in the know”. Our new financial site at www.meridiancity.org/finances is very user friendly and makes it easier for citizens to dive into our budget. We also streamlined the public record requests process and implemented new software for our city council agendas that makes it easier to search and look up documents. On top of this – we are now posting development hearing notices on the social media site NextDoor that reaches more than 21,000 households in Meridian. This year, we plan to add a location with development information to our homepage at www.meridiancity.org.

An exciting new addition is that we now live stream all our commission meetings. We’ve been live streaming our council meetings for a few years, but wanted to do more. This makes it easier for citizens to engage with us, from the comfort of home. It’s difficult to sum up my presentation in one blog post, so I encourage you to view the speech in its entirety if you want to know what’s going on in your community.  We’ve posted the video, the speech, the news release and the annual report here.

I very much enjoy serving this community and with your blessing and support, I would like to continue to do so. I love being your Mayor! I have no doubt 2018 will be another great year for Meridian. My theme for my speech was “A Rising Star” – and that is exactly what we will continue to do – rise!
