I remember the discussion like it was yesterday. My staff and I were talking about how the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council wanted to do something to combat bullying and we had just found out a community member had been lost to suicide. We decided enough was enough and we need to make being kind COOL and a habit! That day, Do The Right was born. We knew it was just one day, but the goal was to make it something that would start a movement of compassion, change the hearts and minds, the attitudes of all, each and every day.

Fast forward three years later, I never would have imagined it would be this big. Every year more people and more businesses want to participate. Below is a list of all of the businesses (30+) who we know of – and I’m sure there are some we didn’t even know participated! – that did something kind for customers or sectors of our community such as teachers and law enforcement. Schools in Meridian also played a part – handing out stickers and encouraging students to do something kind for the person to their right. Thanks to our generous presenting sponsor, Idaho Central Credit Union we had even more stickers to give to schools and businesses as well as community members – 40,000! CBH Homes also helped sponsor the event.

Our City departments always enjoy Do The Right day – figuring out what they will do for the department to the right – how they can let them know they are important. This year my office wanted to reach out to Veterans at the American Legion building across from City Hall, since April is Veterans Suicide Awareness Month in Idaho – and in Meridian. We wanted those who served to know we are thankful and they are appreciated! So The Curb Bar and Grill stepped up and donated lunch and we served it to those who served us!

I was really excited to see Meridian Police partner with us in a BIG way this year! Now the Do The Right decal on School Resource Officer patrol cars will be a reminder everyday of how one small gesture of kindness can make a huge difference. We want our drivers on the roads and students at the schools who see these police cars to remember to Do The Right and just BE KIND.

I want to say thank you to everyone for making this day, this movement such a success that grows every year! Even though I know we live in an awesome community, I’m still astounded by the generosity I see!

I urge you all to continue to Do The Right throughout the year – you never know what one small act of kindness will do or the impact it will make. By the way, we haven’t forgotten the person to ‘your left’…turn around and do something kind for them too!

Thank you to the following businesses that we know of who helped make Do The Right a Success!
