This week we will see the amazing result of what can happen when multiple community partners and citizens come together with a focus on the future of the valley and the well-being of others. I am honored to join the Treasure Valley Family YMCA, St. Luke’s Health System, the West Ada School District, the Meridian Library District, Meridian City Council members and our team with the Meridian Parks and Recreation Department in cutting the ribbon at The Hill. The 22.5 acre campus, located near the intersection of South Eagle and Amity roads, is designed to serve as a hub for education, recreation, wellness and literacy.

It all started with gifts – big gifts! Brighton Corporation donated land for the school and then Marti Hill and Dixie Cook decided to build on that – donating 15 more acres to create The Hill. This made the park and the YMCA building possible.  The Hill family has farmed the land for more than 100 years, and has a legacy of giving back to the community. Now their legacy will have a positive impact on families of today and future generations.

That’s why our Meridian Parks and Recreation team involved Marti and Dixie in the design of Hillsdale Park. It’s based on an agricultural theme celebrating The Hill heritage - land it sits on has been a family farm for over 100 years. The park’s design includes a tractor playground, hay bale benches, and a sign commemorating the Century Farm land.

We’re celebrating the grand opening of The Hill at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 25. I’m looking forward to this but I’m really excited for the public to join us as the celebration continues that same night (Friday) – from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m at Hillsdale Park. Here at City Hall we like to call it the “Marti Party” because we’re celebrating his family, the many donors and partners who made it possible, but also because Marti is bringing in his favorite band from Arizona to the event, the Southwest Surfers (a Beach Boys cover band).  It goes without saying that Marti wants citizens to enjoy the space that is now open to them! The event also includes a classic car display, games for kids, food trucks and lots more, so be sure to mark your calendars and join us!

Friday is a big day and worthy of celebrating as we mark the opening of The Hill - an unique collaboration that is already garnering national attention and will serve as a model for other communities across the country. I’ve long been an advocate of partnerships and The Hill is a shining example of what can happen when people work together.
