by Mayor Tammy
The leaves are changing colors across our community and the air outside is crisp. It’s beautiful! Fall has arrived in Meridian. This is a wonderful season in our area and I especially like it because it marks the return of my walking club with local students.
National Walk to School Day is Wednesday, October 10. This is an important day each year as we’re reminded of the importance of physical activity in our lives and safety when it comes to walking to school. October is a big walking month for me as we kick off the Mayor’s Walking Challenge. The month-long competition is designed to promote good health and activity for area school children by getting Idaho Mayors active and walking at our elementary schools. In addition, Mayors who walk an average of 10,000 steps a day will win $1,000 to donate to a park or school of their choice for new physical activity equipment. So I’m on a mission and will be visiting every elementary school in Meridian this month and look forward to walking with our kids! I’ll be armed with a FitBit all month that will not only track my steps as I walk alongside students, but also the walking activity I take part in throughout the day.
This month is also the kickoff to Mayor Tammy’s Walking Club, when we encourage schools to track miles their students run throughout the year. The club continues into the spring and culminates with a celebration at each school next May with the classrooms who were most active. We have had great participation from schools in Meridian – including our home schooled youth! This program – now in its 5th Year – is only possible thanks to great partnerships with our business community. This year our presenting sponsor is Idaho Central Credit Union along with our other sponsor First Interstate Bank.
I’m looking for a couple of volunteers to help with Mayor Tammy’s Walking Club. If you like to be around children, want to help promote physical activity and are free this month as well as this spring, I’d love to have your help. If interested, please reach out to the City’s Volunteer Coordinator, Barb Hatch, firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Walking with the kids is certainly a highlight for me as I love seeing the excitement in their eyes as they get active and improve their health. I also enjoy my discussions - I always learn something new from our kids! The Walking Club is a great reminder of just how easy and simple it is to add physical activity and exercise into our already busy schedules.
I invite you to join me, and our elementary students, in walking during the month of October. It is my hope that through this challenge we not only take a few moments to identify ways to improve our own physical activity each day, and then do it. I hope to see you out on the walking paths!
Mayor Tammy kicked off “Walktober” at River Valley Elementary school on Monday, October 8, 2018. The students were as excited as she was!
