For those who know me well, the holidays are a very special time of year. It all begins with Thanksgiving - when families and friends come together to celebrate with one another. Whether you are gathering in Meridian or traveling to another location, I wanted to take a moment to encourage you and your family to consider the plentiful blessings we have as a community.
We live in a clean, safe community, with an expanding Parks system, neighbors that are willing to lend a helping hand and work together, and our economy continues to thrive with more family wage job opportunities. While this isn’t true everywhere, it really sheds a light on why people choose to call Meridian home – though some days I want to keep it our little secret!
We have so many citizens who give freely of their time and talents to ensure Meridian is a great place to live, work, and raise a family! These are the unsung heroes who spend time at the Meridian Food Bank, making sure others have food to eat; volunteer at one of our local hospitals, non-profits or at church, at our parks or at city hall; or those who simply reach out to help neighbors in need.
As you sit down with your loved ones on Thanksgiving, I hope you will take a minute to think of those who are working on Thanksgiving to keep our city safe. Our Police Department will be on patrol and our Fire Department will be prepared to respond to any emergencies. The Public Works staff will be working behind-the-scenes making sure we all have water flowing to and from our homes. And of course our partner agencies will be there if a need arises for an ambulance or if the roads need attention. Please also think of those that don’t have family in the area or might have lost a loved one this last year that might struggle during this first holiday season without them.
Right after Thanksgiving, We will focus our attentions on Christmas – my favorite holiday! Our Parks and Recreation team will be busy putting the final touches on the Christmas in Meridian festivities that begin the week after Thanksgiving (Nov. 30 – Dec. 8).
Together, we make Meridian the place we are all proud to call home. I have many blessings to be grateful for this Thanksgiving – one of the largest being that I get to serve all of you!
