This week, we are focusing on the 2019 General City Election, which will be here before we know it!

This is a pivotal time in Meridian. As most know, I decided not to run for re-election this fall, which means Meridian will have a new Mayor beginning in January. But it’s not just my seat that is up for election. Three of the current City Council members will be stepping down from their Council seats, leaving important voids in City leadership that need to be filled. If you have ever considered running for office in Meridian, this is your chance. It’s a chance to become a part of something big - something very special.

But how? Where do you even begin? What does the job entail? I know it can seem daunting, but don’t worry - we’re here to help! We have a couple of great events planned this week to help you understand the roles and responsibilities of elected officials as well as the process of running for an open seat.

On Tuesday, the City Clerk will be hosting an information session for anyone interested in running for City Council or Mayor in the upcoming election. The event begins at 6PM at Meridian City Hall and will cover the requirements to officially run for elected office, including important deadlines associated with the 2019 election. You’ll have an opportunity to ask questions and gain a better understanding of the election process.

On Wednesday, you can join myself and City Council President, Joe Borton, at City 101. At this event we will give you a run down of what the different elected roles entail.

Now, if you’ve ever watched a City Council meeting, you know that we don’t all agree on everything. But those differing viewpoints are important to shape a well-rounded and forward thinking city. A strong City Council doesn’t always see eye to eye, but each member comes in with eyes – and ears – wide open. It is not a job for the faint of heart, but for those that will put their entire heart into the job. It can be hard, emotional, stressful, and time consuming. But at the end of the day, I think we’d all agree that it’s more than worth it. I know it has been for me - and I think the others would agree!
