There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle when it comes to a well-rounded community. One of those puzzle pieces that makes Meridian so great is our community investment in and celebration of the arts.

We all have our own talents, but some are blessed with talents that we can all enjoy such as the Meridian Symphony and the Treasure Valley Children Theater. There is painting, dancing, singing, film-making, sculpting – Meridian has it all – and it’s time to celebrate that!

That’s right, it’s almost time for Meridian Art Week. The week-long celebration can be experienced in Downtown Meridian throughout the first week of September.

Entering its third year, the Meridian Arts Commission has taken what was once an idea and a blank canvas, and created something beautiful! The week’s festivities include; The Meridian Art Drop, a Scavenger Hunt, Kick-Off Celebration, Artist Resources and Grants Panel, Songwriter Workshop, Writer’s Bloc, Art Sip, Initial Point Gallery Reception, Art Walk, Children’s Theater Performance, Chalk Art Competition, and more!

My personal favorite is the Art Drop, where residents of all ages and talents can leave their creations throughout Downtown Meridian. Since it’s inception a few years ago, some friends and I get together to make art of our own to drop. It is so much fun - and we’ve made it a tradition! Over the years I’ve made everything from painted rocks and canvas to Christmas ornaments. If you don’t have the space to create at home, that’s okay! This year the Angry Easel and Happy Hour Homemaker will actually be offering discounted projects for those looking to participate in the Art Drop!

Another community favorite is the Chalk Art Competition. The event gives participants the opportunity to show off their talent in a friendly competition on Main Street. Participants can compete individually, as a family, or as a team. We have seen some amazing chalk art over the years and expect this year to be no different. And - as if drawing on the sidewalk isn’t fun enough, artists have the opportunity to leave with prizes ranging from $25-$200!!

Art is an outlet, a form of therapy, and a deliverer of joy. Art transcends borders, languages, and generations. It doesn’t matter how old we are, where we come from, or what religion or political party we affiliate with – art connects us all. I hope you’ll join us September 3-7, as we celebrate this important facet of our community. Grab a paint brush, markers, or a microphone… or just sit back, relax and enjoy the show!
