Program Overview:

The City of Meridian offers an exciting opportunity for students to be introduced to the functions of City government. The Mayor’s Office Summer Internship Program gives an intern an insider view of local government, as well as a glimpse of a possible career in the public sector. Interns will directly support the work of the assistants to the Mayor.

Interns will gain hands-on experience with city government and develop skills that will serve them well in future occupations. Interns will be involved in the logistics of the Mayor’s day to day business and schedule, gain visibility to what goes on in the Mayor’s office as well as how to handle public events. Interns may be involved in policy research, program design, implementation and evaluation, public presentations and material development, general administrative duties and other special projects as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Internships are available to graduate and undergraduate students. Students must either be a Meridian resident attending an out of town college or be a student at Boise State University.

Interns must:

Have an interest in city government

Be enthusiastic about initiatives in Meridian

Able to work independently and complete tasks in a timely manner

Familiar with computer software including but not limited to Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point)

Examples of General Internship Responsibilities:

Depending on experience and skill set, work efforts may include:

Assist with answering phones

Project research

Assist with the preparation of speeches and remarks

Assist with all constituent correspondence

Open and distribute mail, filing, and typing

Attend events, meetings, and briefings as requested

Assist in the coordination of seasonal events

Examples of Communications Internship Responsibilities:

Assist with answering phones and general office functions such as, filing, and typing

Perform research projects

Assist with the preparation of public remarks and constituent correspondence

Assist with public information and public contact programs

Write stories for and assist in the production of the quarterly CityNews publication

Attend meetings, briefings, and events and provide feedback

Assist in the preparation of a weekly news release

Assist in the creation of print, video, and other mediums for dissemination of information to the public


Intern hours are flexible working a minimum of 10 hours per week with a maximum of 19 hours per week spread over 3 or 4 days per week during standard business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.


There is no financial compensation offered though you may receive academic credit and invaluable experience working with the Mayor s staff.
