The City of Meridian is pleased to share the results of a 2017 city-wide survey that was administered to assess citizen satisfaction with City services and their priorities. There were 743 randomly selected residents who completed the survey which resulted in a margin of error plus or minus 3.6% at a 95% level of confidence. Ninety-three percent of residents surveyed indicated the City exceeds expectations as a place to raise a family, and 92% rated Meridian as an excellent place to live with 91% saying they have an “overall feeling of safety” here.  

“To say I am pleased with the numbers is an understatement! Our City Staff works diligently to provide the best service for customers and they take pride in working for our residents – these numbers prove it,” said Mayor Tammy de Weerd, City of Meridian. “In the three years since we last surveyed our citizens, we have improved results in 64 of the 84 areas.”  

The last time the City surveyed the community was in 2014 and the numbers were even higher this time around, particularly in the areas of Communications, Programs for Youth and Code Enforcement.

As part of the survey, comparative benchmarks were made between Meridian, the Mountain Region, and the United States. The City and its partners rated above the national average in 42 of the 46 areas that were compared and significantly higher than the U.S. average (difference of 5% or more) in 39 areas, with 35 having a 10% difference or more.  Overall quality of City services provided, customer service from City employees, and overall value received for City taxes/fees were each at least 30% higher than the U.S average.

The following services in Meridian received “excellent” marks from those who completed the survey:  Place to live/raise a family, access to quality shopping /entertainment, number of city parks, quality/appearance/maintenance of city parks, quality of athletic fields, quality of local police protection, overall quality of fire department, response to 911 emergencies, safety in parks, and professionalism of employees responding to emergencies.

Those surveyed rated the following three items as highest priority issues that should receive emphasis from the City over the next three years: Roads/traffic/transportation, education/schools, and growth/development.  In addition, jobs/economic development also rated high in the survey. 

“While we were thrilled to see the positive results, an important takeaway from the survey is the issues our residents believe are the highest priorities. It will be important that the City Council and I have a discussion about how we can continue to partner with stakeholders to bring about solutions to these priorities,” said Mayor De Weerd.

Here’s a look at some major findings noted above:

Place to Raise a Family 

Ninety‐three percent (93%) of the residents surveyed, who had an opinion, indicated the City as a place to raise a family exceeds their expectations (rating of 7 to 10 on a 10‐point scale).Ninety‐one percent (91%) of those surveyed, who had an opinion, indicated that the City as a place to live exceeds their expectations. Only one item, providing mobility options other than driving, saw a significant number of respondents indicate their expectations were not met.

Overall Quality of Life in the City 

Overall, 85% of residents surveyed, who had an opinion, indicated that the overall quality of life in the City exceeds their expectations (rating of 7 to 10 on a 10‐point scale). Seventy‐nine percent (79%) of residents surveyed, who had an opinion, indicated that the overall quality of City services is exceeding their expectations (rating of 7 to 10 on a 10‐point scale).

Value Received for City Tax Dollars and Fees 

Overall, 72% of residents surveyed, who had an opinion, feel they are getting their money’s worth for the value they receive from City tax dollars and fees (rating of 7 to 10 on a 10‐point scale). This is the same percentage of respondents who feel they are getting their money’s worth in 2014. The chart below shows how the 2014 responses compare to those in 2017.
