Celebrating America250 in Meridian

This year, our nation celebrates a milestone that comes only once: the 250th anniversary of the United States of America.

There is something powerful about pausing to reflect on what this nation has been, what it is today, and what it can still become. We have had our struggles — every generation has. But this country was built on the belief that free people, working together in their communities, can govern themselves and build something worth passing on. That belief has never been easy to live up to. It has required sacrifice, compromise, hard work, and the willingness to remain committed to each other even when it is difficult.

Meridian is proof of that belief in action. We are a city of people who chose to be here, those who work hard, raise families, volunteer in schools and churches, coach youth sports, build businesses, and look out for our neighbors. That is the American story, playing out every single day in our 38 square miles.

Throughout the summer, residents have participated in a variety of events to educate, inspire, and celebrate America250. From the Meridian History Panel, where longtime residents shared stories of our city’s past, to the “Pursuit of Happiness” art exhibit at City Hall, these events have helped connect our history to the present in thoughtful and engaging ways. I want to thank the individuals, businesses, and organizations who helped support the many events, as it is a true reflection of the community spirit that makes Meridian such a special place to live.

While many will gather in Storey Park to watch the largest professional firework celebration in the City’s history on the 4th of July, we know others will choose to celebrate with neighbors around the City. As we gather, please keep in mind how your actions are impacting others around you, as well as the ability of our police, fire, and county EMS to safely navigate through the community. We want our community to have a safe celebration and respect those with children, animals, and others whose health is impacted by fireworks. Please remember that illegal aerial fireworks pose an even greater risk to the community.

I also want to encourage all of us to find meaningful ways to mark this anniversary, be it in our neighborhoods, schools, faith communities, and businesses. Celebrate what it means to be an American. Celebrate what it means to be from Meridian. Teach your children what this milestone represents and take the time to share stories and traditions, not just as a historical fact, but as a living responsibility.

The freedoms we enjoy were not and are not free. They were earned by generations who believed in something bigger than themselves, and it is our turn to honor that. Meridian has always been a place where people can come together. This anniversary gives us another reason to remember that we are, at our core, neighbors, Americans, and we are in this together.

I wish you all a happy 4th of July, as together we set the stage for the next 250 years of America.
