Hello Meridian and Happy 2026.
As we kick off the New Year, I want to take a moment to recognize our three returning members to our city council who will be sworn in this week.
Brian Whitlock, who was appointed in 2024, was elected to his District one seat for the first time this past November. Brian brings more than 30 years of public service leadership experience in local and state government as well as health care policy.
Beginning his fourth term as District six, Luke Cavener who is the dean of the Meridian City Council, alongside his long term service to the city. Luke works for the American Cancer Society and can often be found volunteering out and about in the community.
District four Council Member John Overton. John spent 27 years as a Meridian police officer, retiring in 2017 and was appointed to the Council on 2022, bringing years of knowledge about the city to his role on city council. I am grateful for all three of their continued willingness to serve Meridian for the next four years.
The Idaho Legislature is also returning to Boise and Governor Little will deliver the State of the State address on January 12, where he will outline his plan for addressing Idaho's priorities in the current budget shortfall.
As mayor and president of the Association of Idaho Cities, I will be actively engaged in issues that impact our ability to deliver services to you, our community, and our quality of life.
Finally, as we kick off 2026, I want to highlight how excited I am to celebrate our nation's 250th birthday this year. Over the coming months, you'll hear more about efforts to celebrate America's 250 right here Meridian.
Until then, I want to say thank you for staying connected and being part of making reading the premier place to live, work and raise a family.
